Toxic Behavior That Employees Dislike about Their Leaders

toxic-behaviour

As the boss, you’re responsible for setting the tone at work. When you say something, people listen. You can create a healthy or terrible work environment with your behavior. Remember that your employees depend on you. If you don’t show the right attitude, they will feel turned off. Others might even decide to leave the company for good. Here are a few things you need to avoid.

Being condescending

Just because you’re the boss doesn’t mean you can say whatever you want. You should be careful with your words. There are better ways to express frustrations. Focus on helping people grow instead of making them feel bad. Everyone wants the best for the company. If you sound condescending, it’s as if you’re the only one who cares.

Bad temper

Manage your emotions well when you’re the boss. Gone were the days when business leaders can do whatever they want in the workplace. You can throw tantrums or scream at your employees, and everyone will keep quiet. These days, your employees will speak up. They won’t allow you to treat them badly, especially if they’ve done their best. Find a way to control your feelings and speak when you’re ready. Otherwise, you end up saying the wrong things.

Inappropriate behavior

You will never last on your post if you harass your employees. For too long, employees remained quiet even if they experienced workplace harassment in fears of losing their jobs. Your terrible behavior will get exposed if you continue doing it. From your choice of words to your actions in the workplace, always be appropriate. The key is to avoid doing to your employees something you don’t want anyone to do to you.

Playing favorites

Your employees will feel it when you favor an employee over another. When you keep assigning leadership roles to one person, the rest will feel inferior. You also select the same employee for business trips. Even the bonuses are unevenly distributed. Your employees will lose motivation when you display this behavior at work.

Treating the workplace like a playground

There’s nothing wrong in creating a relaxing work environment. You want everyone to feel good at work. However, it’s a problem if you keep pushing the envelope. Don’t allow employees to play around and speak so loudly. They disturb others who want to concentrate. You may set up a room for entertainment purposes, or for employees who wish to take a break. Once they decided to get back to their desks, it’s time to work again.

Assigning too many tasks

assign many tasks

You expect a lot from your employees. You even want them to come during the weekends to get things done. The problem is that you don’t pay them an appropriate amount. You also don’t give them the choice. Be realistic in your expectations and don’t treat the employees like robots. They might decide to leave if there’s no chance to take a break.

Evaluate yourself and consider changes if necessary. Otherwise, you will lose the best people in your team.
