Just because you have decided to start a small business does not necessarily mean you can leave your day job and focus on the business. Yes, it is important to give a lot of attention on this business for it to take off. Don’t forget though that it can always go both ways. There is no guarantee that it goes towards the direction you want it to be.
This is why at the beginning of your newly formed business; still keep your day job. Besides, you can manage your business online. You don’t need to be physically present on the business site to see how things go. It is possible to still make decisions or think of creative strategies to improve your business while working on a day job at the same time. If you are not yet convinced, here are some more reasons to still keep the day job.
You need money for the business
You might have gotten enough funds to serve as capital for your business. It doesn’t mean you won’t incur more expenses along the way. If your business is still on the process of taking off, you might have to shell out more money. Without a day job, where will you get this amount? Also, if the business is not doing well, how can you provide for the needs of your family? This is why you really have to keep your day job, at least for now.
Your business is still a working progress
You won’t open your business if you are not certain of it. You have validated your ideas, conducted a feasibility study and had a soft opening first. Despite that, it is still possible that your business won’t succeed the way you want to. If everything fails, at least you have your day job to fall back on. Later, you can easily save money to start a new business venture.
You can learn a lot from your day job
Whether you are working for an accounting firm or a manufacturing company, there are a lot of things that you will learn out of your work. You might even be sent to seminars and conferences where you learn something new from top executives of other businesses. Use this to your advantage. You might not have the same chance if you resign now. You still need this information to be a better business person.
You need a steady paycheck
In any business, the flow of income is not steady. There are times when there is a surge in sales while there are other instances when things don’t go as planned. Your income might fluctuate but your expenses don’t. This is why you need to have a steady paycheck and you can only get this from your work.
These are just some of the reasons why you have to keep your day job. This is just for now while your business is still taking off. If you feel like it can survive tough challenges, you might have to rethink your decision of leaving your day job.
