Being an emotional person, people judge you in a negative way. They think that you should not run a business or you don’t deserve to be a leader. In a way, they are true. If you could not control your emotion and this affects your decisions, you have no business leading a company.
The good thing is that being emotional is not necessarily a bad thing. You can turn this attitude around and it can help you become a better leader.
Address your emotions
Ignoring your emotions is not a good thing. If you feel sad or irritated, don’t just let it go. Hiding these emotions will only make you weak, exhausted and unpleasant. No one would like to work with you. Look for other people to speak with. Consult with a psychologist to address issues you have not yet worked on. Don’t let a day pass without acknowledging how you feel or else it will pile up until you can no longer handle the situation.
Channel your negative emotions properly
There are people who are too emotional and they usually lash out on other people. Those who are in power tend to get angry with lower level employees. They turn down all ideas even if they were not properly assessed. If you are this type of person, it won’t help your business. The best thing to do is to channel that anger effectively.
If you are trying to cool down due to anger, research online. Get fresh ideas by reading articles, watching videos or chatting with fellow business people. Otherwise, just stay quiet, meditate and gather your thoughts. In silence, you might find a great idea that could help improve your business.
Express your anger
The idea of redirecting your emotions is a good thing. However, not everyone feels better if they channel their negative emotions into something positive. You can express your anger in other ways without necessarily hurting people. This may not seem like a good idea, but it is better to just express your anger than hold back. Write how you feel if it helps. Break things that are not too valuable if it would make you feel better. There are a lot of ways for you to express how you really feel.
Allow yourself to be vulnerable
Even if you lead a company, it doesn’t mean you have to be the tough guy all the time. In a way, you need to show strength because others get their strength from you. However, if you feel like you could not take it, feel free to let some of your employees know. Don’t be afraid to express how you really feel if it takes a huge thorn off your chest. You will even be viewed more positively because you have just become more relatable.
Being emotional can be good or bad. The way you handle your emotions is what matters most.
